If you’re gluten free, you’ve likely had a dessert or at least a food with an ingredient from Enjoy Life Foods. But you probably didn’t know that Enjoy Life Foods began as part of a graduate school business plan back in 2001. Scott Mandell, founder and CEO, was sitting in an MBA class taught by none other than Oprah Winfrey, when, in her traditional Oprah style, encouraged all students to live without regrets. And so, instead of returning to his family’s banking business, he took an idea that he had developed in the program, and forged ahead. Mandell launched Enjoy Life Foods in September 2001. Starting a business is never easy, and September 2001 was a particularly difficult time for the the United States on so many levels, but he persevered. In 2005 Enjoy Life Foods became the first company to be certified gluten free by the GFCO(Gluten Free Certification Organization). In 2012 they launched their “Plentil” line of salty snacks, and in 2013 became the first company to receive non-GMO status for 100% of their products. In 2016, after opening a 200,000 square foot facility in Indiana, they became the country’s largest GF bakery, and expanded into Australia and China in 2017. They most recently changed their packaging color to teal, a nod to allergen-friendly communities everywhere(think teal pumpkins at Halloween).
